Hopo's: a history...
Our beautiful building is a treasure of the city, boasting high beamed ceilings, bare brick walls and bright windows throughout. As many of our customers fondly remember, 21 Station Street was originally one of the city's leading industrial engineers merchants.H. Hopkinson Ltd. was established around 1880 as a family business selling locally to factories, collieries, and textile mills.
Reportedly still as jampacked as we are today, the building housed engineering goods from sheets of steel, aluminium, and brass,to nuts, bolts, tools, and ladders. Brought back to life by The Arts Organisation the building was sympathetically restored and housed artists studios for many years. To keep the memory of ‘old Hopo’s’ (as it is often referred to) we chose to carry on in the name of this iconic establishment when we opened in 2010.
